I had an "aha moment" in this course when we discussed how depression affects older adults. Previous to this learning experience, I did not ever think about how depression could affect the older adult population. I associated it more with adolescents and adults. When we learned about how social isolation, lack of support and other factors can influence older adult depression, it was a very eye opening learning experience for me. I think people frequently stereotype older adults as being rude, mean or impatient. I myself have been guilty of these stereotypes at times. However, when you look deeper into the root of feelings and behaviours, some older adults may be dealing with depression or anger related to changes and challenges they are facing in their lives. Perhaps lack of social interaction or support, changes in physical appearance, motor skills or cognitive functioning are a result in changes to the way they may react in certain situations. However, it is easier for us to categorize them with these stereotypes than look for the deeper meaning or cause.
Having this knowledge and information will help me educate others and be more conscious of my approach to working with older adults. If I am helping develop a plan for long-term care or in-home care, I will make sure to listen to the needs of the older adult and their families. I will pay close attention to activities and hobbies they enjoy. I will try my best to ensure they feel supported and valued, and that they are an active participant in creating their own positive well-being.
