Hello Class! My name is Ellen Coleman. I live in Windsor, Ontario Canada. I have my Undergraduate degree in Honours Psychology and am currently in the final semester in the Master of Social Work Program. I am English and Italian. I have a beautiful little family which consists of my boyfriend and our 2 year-old son. We both have amazing parents and are close with our families. My 2 year-old son is my whole world, heart, soul and driving force behind what encouraged me to go back to school.
My interests outside of school include reading, cooking, yoga and any form of exercise, marine biology and travelling. I had the privilege of attending high school in Lanciano, Italy. After my time there, I fell in love with Europe and wanted to learn about the world and other cultures. My passion for travel has allowed me to teach English in Italy and backpack Europe twice for a duration of 4 months each visit, live out West in Calgary and Fort McMurray Alberta, travel to several places around the United States including Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, and my favourite - LAS VEGAS. I have also traveled to South Africa and Alaska.
Social Work Experience & Why Social Work?
http://socialwork.wayne.edu/about/mission.php
The majority of my social work experience has been through my field placements. I've always had a passion for interacting and learning about others, and wanted to help people any way I could. Although I loved my psychology classes, I felt that a Master of Social Work degree was a better fit for my interests. I quote the wonderful Christy Turlington Burns (you can learn more about her here: http://everymothercounts.org) who said "I became a maternal health advocate the day I became a mom." This expresses exactly how I feel. I was fortunate enough to have my field placement in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Windsor Regional Hospital last semester and had the opportunity to work with the most incredible Perinatal Social Worker who inspired me each day. Perinatal Social Workers are "employed in a variety of settings, perinatal social workers help individuals, families, and communities respond to psychosocial issues that emerge during the period from pre-pregnancy through an infant’s first year of life" (http://www.napsw.org/perinatal-social-worker/).

Why this class SW5720?
I am looking forward to taking SW5720 to gain more understanding of the field of gerontology, as I have very little experience working with older adults. Growing older is an inevitable part of life, and I am looking forward to understanding how needs, resources and abilities change with aging. I am interested in learning about how various demographic factors influencing the aging process and how various cultures embrace or perceive aging. I am also looking forward to learning about the social changes that happen with aging and stereotypes about aging. Any information learned in this course will be interesting and beneficial.
